How to Measure a Couch, Sofa or Lounge

October 06, 2020

It’s vital to make sure that any couch or lounge suite you buy will fit through your doors and into your lounge room.

Here’s how to take measurements before you buy or sell a couch or sofa.

If you’re buying a couch, you’ll need to measure not just the space it’s going to sit in, but every space it will pass through to get there. The places you need to account for and measure are:

  • Doorways

  • Stairwell

  • Hallways

Measure the lowest point of the stairwell- the height between the stairs and the ceiling. This is often the most problematic spot when moving furniture.

When you’re measuring the couch itself, you’ll generally need to take two sets of measurements.

  • The first with the cushions in place which will give you the height that your new couch will sit at in your home.

  • The second without any removable cushions, which will give you the frame height and let you know if the couch will be able to be moved into your home.

Style of Couch

You will need to take into consideration the style of couch. Are you looking for or selling a 2, 2.5 or 3 Seater Couch. Or are you after a modular style couch and can the modular sections be moved around? If you need a sofa bed, remember to foldout the bed and measure the space required in your room.

Measure your Couch

Using a tape measure, follow these tips to get clear and accurate measurements of the couch or sofa itself:

  1. Height: Measure the height at the highest point- which will generally be the middle of the back of the couch.

  2. Width: Measure the width from arm to arm, taking the measurements at the widest point of the sofa. For instance, if the sofa has rolled arms, measure from outside the widest part of one arm to the other arm, and not at the bottom near the legs.

  3. Depth: Measure the depth of the sofa from the outside edge of the seat all the way to the back.

  4. Diagonal Depth: Measure the diagonal depth of a sofa by placing a straight tape measure from the top back of the frame to the bottom front

Once you have these measurements, you’ll know whether this is the couch that will work for you! If you’re preparing to advertise to sell a couch, taking these measurements will leave potential buyers in no doubt as to whether this is the couch or sofa for them.
