Timeless or Tacky? Tracking 21st Century Kitchen Design Trends

When it comes to kitchen design, there have been many trends and styles emerging over the past twenty years. Whilst some of these trends have stood the test of time to become genuine fixtures in any modern kitchen space, there has also been a fair share of design elements that most definitely belong in the past.    In this article, we’ll be exploring some of the most notable kitchen design trends over the past two decades so you can decide for yourself what’s an absolute must-have and what we’re better off without.

Stainless steel fixtures

There is a myriad of benefits to stainless steel in kitchen and bathroom spaces. Easy cleaning and effortless styling are just the tips of the iceberg when it comes to explaining why Euro appliances are Melbourne approved and adored by families from all walks of life in this multicultural city. Although there are some who may say they’re over the trend of stainless steel, it’s worthwhile making the comparison between stainless steel and chrome before tossing this trend out entirely. There’s a balance between sensibility, functionality, and style that stainless steel has, which perfectly complements the idea of the ‘modern kitchen’. We say stainless steel is here to stay.

Monochromatic colour schemes

The most cliche kitchen flooring that could ever exist is a black and white checkerboard. This design scheme has been done and redone over and over again over the past century to the point where it’s baffling to behold. Our kitchens have the potential to possess so much more character than this design scheme allows. In fact, many modern kitchens are embracing brighter and more dynamic colour schemes into their food preparation and meal spaces to provide these highly functional spaces with their own sense of personality. The presence of these brighter colours can actually have a great positive impact on the relationship that your household has with food preparation and family mealtimes. In essence, a colourful kitchen inspires creativity and passionate cooking, two of life’s most immense joys.

Open shelving over cabinets

It’s uncertain whether open shelving is a tacky trend or a practical addition, and the answer is that it genuinely depends on the design and style of your unique household. For some families, open shelving can be a great asset to a kitchen space, as it allows for easy access to kitchen accessories and appliances that are used often and are finicky to stow away after every use. For other families, however, open shelving can be highly impractical and may make your home appear more cluttered. Open shelving can also be potentially hazardous to families with pets or small children. We’re not ready to write this trend off entirely and acknowledge that open shelving can look quite attractive in specific kitchen spaces.

Decorated backsplashes

In terms of functionality, tiled backsplashes must absolutely be identified as a fixture in any modern kitchen. The issue here isn’t the trend itself but the ways in which we go about styling these backsplashes. Using patterned tiling can be risky as there’s always the possibility the patterns or illustrations on those tiles can become outdated. Tiles with drawings of grapevines or farm animals, for instance, most definitely belong in the ‘80s as they are likely to clash with modern kitchen appliances. With the resurgence of wallpapers and modular tiles, however, you can design your own kitchen backsplash to be highly flexible and changeable to ensure that your kitchen’s design scheme is safe from falling into the world of old-fashioned interior design.

Hanging and overhead pot racks

Like open shelving, wall-mounted pot and hanging pot racks can look sublime in select kitchen spaces and in accordance with specific kitchen interior design styles. If you’re looking to put together a rustic or industrialist kitchen, a brass pot rack can be the centrepiece of your whole look. Similarly, if you find yourself cooking with a lot of different size saucepans that may not fit smoothly in traditional storage, pot racks can be just as functional as they are attractive. Even so, just like open shelving, this trend must be handled with some care and attention to ensure that your kitchen space doesn’t just end up looking cluttered.   Kitchens have always been the most functional space in our interior environments. This is an evergreen fact in the world of interior design. Despite this concrete construct, our relationship with our kitchens is still subject to change. Let yourself visit and revisit your kitchen’s design to ensure that your family will always be getting the most out of this space that is essentially personal to you.
