Retro or Mid Century Modern Furniture

September is all about one of Furniture Exchanges favourite trends… Mid-Century Modern and Retro, which is actually short for retrospective. Delve into everything from the past and see how people, back then, thought the future would look like.

Take us back to our favourite furniture era the 50s through to 70s, it’s a little Kitsch, add a bit of pop culture and a pinch of whimsy. Who can forget the Brady Bunch House with the soft olive green leather lounges, low line, sleek cabinets and circular coffee tables in rich teak wood, bluestone internal planter boxes filled with lush green plants and palms, the timber staircase with modern touches , amazing jade green ceramic table lamps, dark timber panel walls, and of course the modern cubic style piece of art.

Furniture Materials

Retro style or Mid-Century Modern furniture has continued to be a major trend, bringing the focus back to famous designers such as Charles & Ray Eames, Joseph Hoffman, Marcel Bruer and Miles Van de Roha to name just a few. Inspiring furniture and interior designers working with modern materials such as plywood, fiberglass, plastic and resin, with many of the pieces created becoming treasured collectables. Just as important are the new furniture designers using old reclaimed and sustainable timbers such as Teakwood, Walnut, Oak and Rosewood. The designs have been given a modern touch but the finishes remain the same, with the intricate grains of the wood being the highlight, finished with staining, waxing or polishing by artisan furniture makers.

Furniture Styles

The major characteristics of Mid Century Modern Furniture include innovation and beauty, which is created by clean sweeping lines. Sideboards, Bars and Drink Trollies are must have pieces when creating your Mid Century Modern Living room. Add a 3 seater Leather Lounge in Cream, then pick up pops of colour with glass lamp shades in Orange or Turquoise. Don’t forget what will become the favourite chair in the house - the Martini chair in yellow. Another way to add that pop of colour to any room is a velvety finish and plush Reef Rug, the circular shape is very important to the era, just pick your favourite colour. The beauty of furniture of this era is how easily it will blend and coordinate with your existing pieces, creating and ambience that your friends and family will enjoy for years to come.
