Do you have a love affair of contemporary design, Scandinavian style, natural products, bright colours, and anything yellow? Then allow us to introduce you to a little gem of a store called Yellow Front Door.
An absolute treasure trove of gorgeous homewares based in Bondi Beach Sydney. They stock a beautiful, bright and bold collection of designer-made indoor and outdoor cushions and unique artworks by artists from all over the world.
We spoke to Kate Unsworth who is the founder and the hunter/gatherer of these gorgeous pieces to find out more about her cool company.
How was Yellow Front Door born?
After taking a break from work for five years to have children, I set up Yellow Front Door in 2013, partly because I wanted the freedom of working for myself. I also didn't want to go back to previous careers in rehabilitation, travel and teaching. I’ve always loved interior design, furniture and homewares, so it seemed like the natural thing to do.
When I bought my first house in 2011, I was frustrated by the high prices of the designer pieces I loved, but didn’t like the cheap, mass-produced alternatives either. So when I set-up Yellow Front Door, my aim was to find beautiful, unique, designer homewares that are still affordable.
What is the Yellow Front Door Style?
Defining our style and choosing the products was really easy for me. However, with no background in design or marketing, there were parts of the business that were certainly a steep learning curve!
I look for pieces from overseas that are uncommon, yet still fit the Australian aesthetic and lifestyle. I gravitate towards pieces that are bold in colour and design, and have a Scandinavian edge.
All our products have a story, and you can read about the designer or artist on our website. I buy small numbers of each product so I can see what people like, continually update stock, and keep up with current trends.
What do you love most about your job?
My favourite part of the job is hunting down inspiring pieces that capture my imagination and I think our customers will love. I always contact the designer or artist personally and find out about their story and background.
At the moment I work out of my home in Bondi Beach, and love the flexibility. My daughters are now 6 and 8 years old, and I really appreciate being available to help out at their school and also being around for their after school activities.
What's next in store for Yellow Front Door?
I’d like to continue to develop our own YFD range of outdoor cushions using long-lasting outdoor fabrics. And with winter well and truly here, I've been sourcing new luxe wool throws and cushions in hip designs.
