House of Home are so excited to introduce Funky Homes - one of Tasmania’s premiere home and lifestyle stores. We had the pleasure of working with owner Helena Facer on Bec and George Douros' new show - The Love Shack.
Based in the heart of Hobart, Funky Homes offer modern, innovative and unique products to all of Australia via their online channel. They live and and love what they do and strive to be trend leaders by constantly scanning the globe, and their own backyard in Tassie, to bring you the cream of the crop in truly special homewares, furniture pieces, small run art pieces and gifts. They also dedicated to providing you superlative customer service from start to finish.
After working with Funky Homes, we were so inspired we asked Helena to share her story.
"After close to 7 years living in Melbourne I was back in Hobart within 3 months to do something that allowed me to be me and I haven’t looked back''. Helena Facer | Funky Homes
How did you get into the business?
I grew up with my Dad in business and had for a number of years tried to figure out what I wanted to do and how I could combine my love of creativity, colour and design into a career. I definitely tried a lot of options in a short period of time but didn’t ever seem to fall in love with what I was doing. We were actually on a trip in Europe and for the last week or so of our holiday I would pop into internet café’s saying I was checking email but secretly I would also check what business’s were for sale as I didn’t want to go back to my corporate job with Flight Centre. We returned home and on my first day back at work I again checked online and there it was ‘My Opportunity’ and I didn’t hesitate. After close to 7 years living in Melbourne I was back in Hobart within 3 months to do something that allowed me to be me and I haven’t looked back.
What can we expect when we come instore?
When we took over the shop our focus and vision was to showcase colour and offer affordability in our market. I wanted to have a shop full of beautiful wares that allowed people to change and evolve as trends do without breaking the budget. We still love our colour but we have worked tirelessly to offer a unique, curated and ever changing mix of wares that offer everyday pieces and key designer wares also. We have created a framework in our business that allows us to evolve each season and have the shop showcasing the latest trends in home design and from the gift industry along with many of the staple favourites.
Tell us about your favourite products at the moment?
I might be a little biased on this as we have literally just finished creating our own label and working with a local furniture designer to create our very first furniture collection “The Campbell Furniture Range”. Our own brand ‘The Colour Society’ was established early last year to allow me to follow my product design dream and for our store to have signature ranges exclusive to us in our market place. We wanted to create a brand that is all about showcasing local talent and offering a platform that would give them a step into the industry all while we carefully selected products and ranges that fitted the shops needs and gaps in the market that we have found.
What makes your store special?
I think our signature is in the products and brands we select and how we put our in store displays together. We try not to be a shop full of all the big name brands. We work to source and find products that are new, unique, fresh and allow us to put all the pieces of the puzzle together to showcase a variety of the latest looks and showcase emerging brands.
What’s your favourite question from a customer?
Our day is filled with questions but I really just enjoy chatting with our customers, learning about them and finding ways I can help get the things they are seeking. People are seeing so many amazing things through social media that it can be a bit of an exercise catering to everyone’s needs. I really just enjoy helping people and letting them know that despite the four walls limitations of our store we still have access to a huge library of options and things that we can easily source.
What’s your favourite part of the work day?
Oh this one is easy, it would have to be unpacking all the new stock that I have often forgotten I have ordered and enjoying it all over again. I do also have a huge soft spot for merchandising, and gift wrapping all the special things our customers select.
''I was so surprised to see Bec Durous peering in through our shop window recently. You can't imagine my excitement when I received a phone call the next day with a list of products that Bec wanted us to supply for her lovely Love Shack''! Helena Facer | Funky Homes
Who would you love to serve in store?
I am secretly not that great with who’s, who but I was so surprised to see Bec Durous peering in through our shop window recently. Bec was scouting homewares for her new show the Love Shack. You can't imagine my excitement when I received a phone call the next day with a list of products that Bec wanted us to supply for her lovely Love Shack!
What inspires you?
I do love my magazines and Pinterest is also great for ideas or finding ways to do things. I am lucky enough that I have travelled a lot and I draw a lot of my styling inspiration from the exposure that has given me, which also influences my product sourcing. I am not the typical traveller that comes home with souvenirs, instead my suitcase is normally overflowing with inspirations and treasures I have found for the shop or that could be future products development ideas.
Are you regularly updating your own home with products from the store?
We have actually just started building our dream home and the poor builders have to deal with me making changes each week as I think of something new that I want to work into the house. My list is growing very quickly of products I plan to take home: this week it’s a gorgeous hanging rattan chair from HK Living that I have made the builder add an extra support for and last week I worked in three vertical gardens, one of them inside … so excited!
House of Home would like to thank Helena and the Funky Homes team for their amazing service and contribution to the Love Shack.
