A rug is an especially important part of home décor. The absence of a rug in a room is like being without the last piece of the puzzle.
A rug not only defines a space to create a focal point, it provides a place to anchor furniture from, adds warmth, helps with room acoustics and provides texture, pattern or colour – all essential elements of design.
M&M Rugs offer an ample selection of stunning rug options that will create a unique visual statement in the home. Awestruck by their carefully curated collections, we just had to learn more about this Aladdin’s cave of carpets. We spoke to owner David Moore about M&M’s successful thirty year stint in the business.
How did you get into the business?
In 1986, after noticing a potential growth area in floor coverings, my parents bought a small shop in Glen Huntly, south east of Melbourne. We are now proudly in the second generation of family ownership and over the past thirty years have grown the business into one of Melbourne’s leading rug specialists, offering a large and diverse range of rugs from all around the world. In 2001 we moved to our current location in East Bentleigh where we showcase our ever increasing and expanding range of rugs.
What can we expect when we come in store?
In-store we carry a large and extensive range of rugs and runners to suit all types of homes and budgets. We believe a good rug should not have to cost a fortune, just as a rug bought to a budget does not have to be a cheap rug.
We carry a large range of rugs in store – ranging from Modern and contemporary designs, to traditional designs and styles. We carry both synthetic to natural fibres, machine made rugs to hand made pieces, and from small mats to large room sized rugs and hall and stair runners.
Our friendly and experienced staff are always happy to help, offering expert advice and drawing from their developed knowledge to help you source the right rug for you requirements. Whether its advice on colour and style, fibre and function or size and placement, we are always happy to assist.
Tell us about your favourite products at the moment?
Our favourite products at the moment are pure wool weaves and textures – available in a large range of colours sizes and weaves – from braided and rope weaves to more organic and casual textures.
Also still loving the amazing products coming out of Belgium and Turkey in machine made synthetic fibres, some great new designs and effects are available and at very good prices.
What makes your store special?
Staff that know the products and can answer most questions as well as being able to offer interior design advice and ideas. We do not do high pressure sales at M&M Rugs; we are more interested in seeing the customer with the right rug for the area.
We offer a Home Trial service so you can see the rug at home in the space before you finalise the purchase. We are happy to work with customers needing interior advice and are often looking at pics of peoples rooms and discussing options and ideas. We also carry one of the largest ranges of rugs you are likely to find in Melbourne’s South East
What’s your favourite question from a customer?
Can I please speak to Melissa?
What’s your favourite part of the work day?
Busy weekends with the shop full of people are always fun and it’s great to see happy customers returning for the 2nd 3rd or forth rug.
What inspires you?
I love seeing new products and trends arise and develop over time. I love the differing effects and finishes continually being invented and developed with simple fibres such as wool, alongside the ever increasingly effective synthetic fibres and European designs that are machine made.
Are you regularly updating your own home with products from the store?
Everyone at M&M’s has at least a couple of pieces in their home and anytime something new and different comes in we are all wondering where we can put it and if we can take it home.
In a perfect world we would all have large warehouse style apartments filled with rugs on every wall and every floor.
