Seriously – is there anything better than catching up with friends over a meal or a drink? Forget the stress of Christmas day (actually my mantra for this year is to relax and enjoy it, but more on that later), my favourite part of the festive season is all those get togethers in the lead up. Casual, relaxed, but always good fun.
We went out and had a look at some of the great table top accessories around for entertaining this summer, and cactus love is at the top of our list!
We headed instore to Zachloe Lifestyle, South Melbourne and were wowed by the following materials and finishes. Here are our five suggestions and ideas for creating a relaxed and fun tabletop:
OK the heroes of this table layout are without doubt those three quirky, happy and fun cactuses. Officially they are vases, but people have used them as candle holders or just as a great table centrepiece on their own. They are definitely going on my pre-Christmas purchase list - I’m not sure I can wait for December 25th.
There is something very appealing about handmade ceramic plates, bowls & cups. The irregularities of the glaze, the ridging from the pottery wheel, and the occasional fingerprint all creating these beautiful honest products that remind us that someone, somewhere, has actually made these products. Zakkia and Ivory House are two brands that have some gorgeous handmade ceramics on offer - take a look at Ivory House's Flax range . Try mixing and matching some of their pieces with your existing crockery.
It’s no secret that I’m really loving all things brass. And after having tracked down a lovely brass planter for my favourite plant, this Watering Can has now become the next focus for my house plant obsession. OK, so strictly speaking, no one needs a watering can on their table when you’ve got friends round for lunch, but when it looks this good – who wouldn’t want one?
Way more relevant though, are these beautifully designed brass Salad Servers. From local brand Lightly, the lovely clean lines and perfect balance of these salad servers would make even the simplest salad special. Also in the same product family, Lightly have put released a solid brass nut cracker (perfect for Christmas day!) and a very handy set of serving spoons of different sizes.
The warmth of both the handmade ceramics and the brass servingware works well with a range of other materials, like concrete, marble, other metals and wood. Mixing up the materials of your servingware creates an inviting, casual vibe, that keeps the emphasis on the food and the company (but still looks great).
The large round concrete tray is from Zakkia and makes a perfect cheese platter – flat, spacious with a rim so that there is no chance of anything sliding off as you carry it. We paired it with a truly stunning cheese knife set from Marble Basics – the marble handles set off perfectly by the brass blades.
Marble Basics have not long released their new range and we are particularly loving their new range of vessels & vases. The Fog Trio Vase is perfect for creating a beautiful arrangement of casual summer blooms to brighten up your table. It’s just the right height (not too tall) and the three separate vases are perfect for arranging all different bloom lengths easily.
Fresh Flowers & Fruit
So now you’ve got your tabletop looking great – all that’s left is to invite some friends over and work out what you are going to serve. We’ve got some great suggestions for easy cocktails , and other than that – relax, have fun and enjoy – after all – that’s what the festive season is meant to be all about.
