There are three things we love at House of Home – gorgeous products, pattern and colour & passionate people.
Anne Cook and Simone Rennard of Sanctuary Studio tick off on all three - This morning I had the pleasure of sitting down with these lovely ladies to learn about their gorgeous products and the story of their brand as they have built their business over the last two years...
Anne and Simone are the mother and daughter team that started Sanctuary Studio only two years ago. Both have a background in interior design, and a shared love of art, colour and pattern, not to mention soft furnishings.
Rewind the clock to 2014, Simone and her sister were dabbling in a hobby business bringing in homewares from India and Morocco. Anne challenged them to make their own product designs rather than promoting other people’s and quite quickly it went from casual chat around the kitchen table to Anne and Simone running a design business with retailers across Australia, the West Coast of the US, and a strong online presence.
Sanctuary Studio started with a bedding range and beautiful scatter cushions. What set their range apart though was the artist that they found to collaborate with, an American Llew Mejia. They can say they knew him before he was famous – since collaborating with Sanctuary Studio Llew has done work for Adidas, Anthropologie, Fortnum & Mason, Reebok and many more.
Llew’s work hit the aesthetic balance that they were looking for in the brand – elegant but edgy, like pairing something folksy with a tattoo motif, the result always classic but with a fresh twist. Anne and Simone were looking to create products that were different to what’s already available, and their guide was to always look for patterns and designs that they loved and pair them with quality fabrics. And it’s worked well for them.
So let’s explore Sanctuary Studio’s most recent range, Neon Drive. Most easily described as Palm Springs meets Bondi, Neon Drive features fun and summery colours, but it’s the artistry of the prints that set this range apart – Anne and Simone have chosen their collab partners very well. The designs are on-trend but not faddy. Oh and one other not so small detail – these are all really lovely quality products, at surprisingly affordable prices.
The current collection sees the introduction of scented candles, sarongs and a very handy overnight bag. Anne and Simone both see Sanctuary Studio as evolving from a homewares range to a lifestyle brand.
So what’s up next season? Keep an eye out for the collection they are calling Harvest. The sneak peak we had revealed re-interpreted botanical prints, rich colours and some gorgeous velvets. And not just for cushions and bedding either, look out for some other great lifestyle products.
Anne and Simone are loving what they are doing – they’ve got a million ideas, but are disciplined about spending their time on getting product design right & refining the range. Market testing is ongoing – with friends and family all contributing their opinions on the next design and product.
It's easy to see how in such a short time Sanctuary Studio has achieved so much.
