Queenslander Aesthetic

The Queenslander design is an important part of Australia’s heritage and a reflection of the warmer climate in Australia. This style conveys a natural, organic feel with a touch of tropical that blends old with new. The result is a modern yet colonial or heritage inspired look that is elegant and understated. Let’s take a look at how this increasingly popular style came about why it’s having a resurgence in popularity.

Queenslander Style Heritage

The iconic tropical Queenslander style home began to evolve in Australia in the mid 1940’s due to a need to address the warmer climate and create a semi-informal outdoor lifestyle. These homes have such an open inviting feel about them and were built with a vernacular appeal that’s completely unique from any other style of architecture in the world. Hence why it remains so important and popular today.

Queenslander Style Interior Elements

To successfully bring the Queenslander style into your bathroom consider introducing the elements below to create an authentic Queenslander interior.

Timber Panelling
Clad the walls with painted Timber Panelling. The panels can extend all the way to the ceiling or stop halfway up the wall with a capping on top.
Subway tiles or bonded brick tile patters such a ‘stretcher’ pattern are a signature look of a Queenslander bathroom.

Decorative plasterwork in the form of mouldings, cornices and ceiling roses add beauty that will remain forever timeless.

Tessellated tiles in chalky colours or plain tiles are typical of a Queenslander bathroom. However, tiles such as timber look tiles, marble look tiles or penny round mosaics can also suit a more modern day setting.

Doors & Windows

Timber casement windows are typical of Queenslander homes. They can be left natural or painted white and are usually teamed with plantation timbers shutters. Subtle stain glass detailing to windows are also common.

Colour Schemes

Colour schemes can vary and today’s modern Queenslander style has moved away from the heritage creams, burgundy’s and greens to a muted palette of natural whites and warm greys with feature colours such as dusky, chalky blues or charcoals.

Bathware & Cabinetry

This is where we find another modern day take on components in the form the old and new. Claw foot baths are teamed with elegant classic or country style cabinetry to act as a major statement piece in a Queenslander bathroom.

Classic style taps in either a chrome, brass or satin nickel finish will are suitable for a Queenslander setting.

Both recessed or above counter basins can be used, even wall mounted basins will work with this style.
