Rejuvenate Your Balcony or Patio

In summer we tend to spend more time outdoors enjoying balmy nights in comfort on our patios or balconies, having friends and family over for barbeques and sunsets. As the weather gets warmer, now is the time to seriously start considering and focusing on updating your patio and balcony.

Unless you live in a penthouse, your balcony most likely will be limited by the amount of space available for you to work with, the same can be applied with patios. At House of Home we’ve devised simple ideas that you can apply to transform any sized outdoor space into a stylish and relaxing area.

Six Steps For Easy Patio Styling

Step 1: Give Your Patio A Good Clean

It’s always best to start with a clean space. We worked on a 1970’s patio with amazing Terrazzo tile inlay. After clearing off all the clutter and washing done the mosaic tiles we realised we had an amazing vintage canvas on which to build our look.

Step 2: Durable Outdoor furniture

Durable doesn’t have to mean you compromise on style when it comes to decorating your patio or balcony. We suggest lightweight sturdy furniture which has been tested against the outdoor elements. That way, you can rest assured knowing your new furniture will last for several years to come.

The Breeze Dining Chairs and matching Breeze Coffee Table from Destination 3000 has dynamic angled legs and intricate woven details. This chair not only looks luxurious, it’s also an extremely comfortable seat; perfect for relaxing outdoors and taking in the sunsets.

Step 3: Surround Yourself with Plants

Large decorative pots filled with tall ferns and palms are ideal for creating that lush garden feeling. The Stripes pot by the Design Twins with its gold band detail will add a level of sophistication to your patio or balcony whilst also complimenting the Breeze outdoor set perfectly.

Step 4: Extra Comforts

We all use cushions to enhance our comfort indoors, so it should be obvious that we also use them outside as well. Cushions as help to create a welcoming and inviting space. It doesn’t matter how small your patio or balcony is, with the right seating and a few scattered cushions, you will definitely be able to entertain in a relaxing summery way.

When choosing cushions for your patio, look at the theme you are creating and choose one colour tone to amplify the style. For this look, we chose to highlight the intensity of the plant life, the Green Triangle Scatter Cushion was a great way for us to feature the greenery as a prominent colour in this simple look.

Furthermore, don’t be limited to just using cushions on seating. If your outdoor area is clean and dust free, incorporate some lovely ground cushions or even bean bags for a more playful style. This is also the perfect solution if you have young ones.

Step 5: Lighting

By incorporating classic glass enclosed lanterns in your patio design you will soon enjoy the subdued romantic feeling associated with candle light. The lightweight Wilson lanterns from Coco & Crème Living are ideal for housing tall cathedral style candles. The glass case is optimal for protecting a candle’s flame against the wind; so you can enjoy candle light all year round.

Step 6: Add A Little Glamour

A little bit of luxury is an essential element to any outdoor space. For this intimate patio scene we chose a gold polkadot accented Kate Spade Ice Bucket from Coco & Crème Living accompanied by two sleek contemporary Milk & Sugar tumblers from The Melbourne Wedding Registry. Whether you’re entertaining your partner or your friends, adding a few glamorous items to your patio will transform this look into a sophisticated considered space.
