In this article we review the following trends:

Kitchen Design Layout Trends

Many kitchens of today are becoming shared family spaces that also permit dining, working or lounging within the same area. Kitchens are being designed to allow spaces to ‘’borrow’’ from each other and offer more versatility and design flexibility. Many new kitchens encompass a dining table integrated into the bench top that can double as a home-office work space. This helps to encourage interaction within the home and create a social vibe.

People are also incorporating bar areas or secondary prep areas into kitchen layouts. These are often positioned in the island and create a space for food preparation while still interacting with those around you, they usually contain a small sink, and feature tapware like the zip products that have on hand hot, cold and sparking water.

Kitchen Colours Styles and Finishes

Kitchen Colour Palettes

Many Interior designers have been specifying darker, more moody colour palettes for the kitchen and many home makers have begun to follow suit, experimenting with dark charcoal grey to black palettes. There has been an increase in black feature kitchens, with black appliances, pendant lights and feature tiles or stone splash backs.

Kitchen Finishes

New designs are seeing a lot more layering colour and texture with mixing of mediums and finishes that create visually interesting but practical spaces. Think dark porcelain or slate bench tops with 3-Dimensional splashback tiles, or a Caeaserstone bench top with a polished mirror-shine finish against super matte black cabinetry and teamed with warm metallic sinks and tapware in brass, copper or gun metal. These sleek finishes are balanced with natural organic looking elements such as timber detailing to the island bench or wide timber plank flooring, or oak timber look tiles.

Tuxedo Kitchens

The ‘Tuxedo’ look will grow to become even popular this year. You may already be familiar with this look without realising it. This is a style that has been cropping up in many design blogs of late. The look is high contrast and combines a two tone, monochromatic colour combo of timeless black and white that’s usually punctuated by elements of timber or brass for warmth. The overall look is one of elegance and refinement yet, has an air of natural simplicity and earthy luxuriance.

Kitchen Cabinetry and Hardware Trends

Kitchen Cabinets

Colour blocking cabinetry will be the way forward. Wall cabinets in a contrasting colour to the base cabinetry are a winning combo that we will continue to see throughout the year. Popular colour combo’s include navy with muted grey and white or black, grey and timber.

Navy is expected to become the Kitchen colour of 2017. Navy really works well with brass accessories and is the suggested finish to go with this colour. More and more kitchen designs are continuing wall cabinetry to extend to the underside of the ceiling to maximise storage space and minimise dust collection.

Kitchen Storage

Incorporating clever storage solutions and using every inch of kitchen cupboard space efficiently is set to become the standard rather than an added extra. Kitchen cupboards will boast deep drawers that allow items to be more easily accessible will come with self-closing mechanisms.

Although kitchen design will see an influx wall hung cabinets in 2017, exposed floating shelves will still have their place. Open shelving provides a place to display items that reflect ones personality and creates interest. They work best in a contrasting finish to the cabinetry as this helps to break up the space and creates a nice mix of finishes.

Kitchen Hardware

The most popular finishes for cabinet handles are Matt Black, Satin Nickel, Pewter and Antique Brass. The thing that is common to all these finishes is that they are matte not high gloss finishes and so do not show finger marks all that easily.

Kitchens can sometimes be overlooked when it comes to the door hardware needs. People tend to consider their cabinetry by not their pantry doors. Yet many people nowadays are opting for the added luxuries of a butler’s pantry and hidden appliances in their kitchen design.

Internal passage levers can be used for hinged butler’s pantry doors, keeping a consistent look throughout the home. For space saving pantries that use sliding cavity doors, sliding cavity sets and flush pulls are the perfect accompanying hardware. With 2017 seeing a trend towards more neutral tones in the kitchen, sliding cavity sets and flush pulls also work in seamlessly with a kitchen’s overall aesthetic.

Kitchen Sink and Tapware Trends

One trend in the market has really swung into high demand is coloured composite granite sinks and matching mixer taps. Black and white sinks will be the colour choices for 2017. Another more luxurious option we will see more of are metallic sinks with matching metallic taps in finishes such as brass, copper and gun metal.

Kitchen Design Trends 2017 Tile Trends

Kitchen Tile & Splash Back Trends

Tiling is coming back as a trend in kitchens with textured or 3-dimensional tiles making an appearance in abundance. There’s going to be a slight shift away from Subway tiles with more people opting for beautiful 60mm round mosaics or hand made textured 150 x 150mm porcelain tiles.

While marble will still have its place, more colourful wall tiles will be sneaking their way into kitchens this year. Larger format floor tiles with an R10 slip rating in greys or charcoals will remain in style and timber look tiles will receive a lot more interest.

Kitchen Appliance Trends

The matte black trend continues and is now influencing both large and small appliances. We will start to see an increase in matte black fridges, dishwashers, ovens and rangehoods especially.

Fridges with French doors are going to be the preferred option, along with self-cleaning ovens that come with a built-in steamer. Silent rangehoods with externally mounted motors that help reduce noise in the kitchen will become more readily available and as such more popular.

Kitchen designs are becoming more minimal and clean looking with the sight lines being left open. When it comes to small appliances many people are opting to integrate these into the cabinetry or conceal them away in a butler style pantry, however for the ones that remain on show chances are they will be matte black.
