House of Home had the delight of speaking to Kimberley Grant, Interior Designer at Dream Design Furniture about the dos and don’ts of choosing textiles and the inspiring tradition of upholstery in today’s world.

“Dream Design Furniture and Upholstery designs and manufactures furniture, specialising in upholstered pieces such as lounge settings, bedroom suites and custom designed orders. We also focus on restoration, restoring and reupholstering our client’s favourite heritage furniture.” Kim explains.

“Dream Design Furniture embodies the idea that anyone can come to us with a concept, there are no limits. We often then produce furniture for interior designers and the general public based on ideas, drawing or collage of inspiring images gathered from magazines or the internet.” Kim informs us.

“Although leather is available in such a wide variety of textures and finished now, my preference has always been for fabrics. Fabric offers an unparalleled variety in colours, textures, weaves, effects and detail that can’t be achieved as well with leather. My current favourite fabrics include luxurious velvets, watercolour florals and embroidered silks.” She describes to us.

When upholstering or re-upholstering and restoring furniture, Kim tells us that there are some basic correct fabric care dos and don’ts that will help sustain the life of your couch “Do spot clean! You’ll have much greater success in removing all traces of the accident if you spot clean as soon as you spill or drop anything on the fabric. Also use a fabric protection spray when you first bring the furniture home, this will really help to make it easier to clean off any mishaps. Whatever you do, do not put cushion covers in the washing machine.” She laughs, “This is a very common mistake that often results in the covers shrinking. I recommend that Dry-cleaning is best used for most furniture fabrics.”

"I recommended seeking advice when selecting a fabric because there are fabrics suitable for all environments and requirements. There are so many different fabrics these days, from the likes of fade resistant to water replant and even mold resistant fabrics, depending on what your needs are, a good upholster should be able to find a suitable fabric to fit your need!"

"The Hunter range is one of my favourite products available today. Its style is exclusive to Dream Design Furniture and is a standout in our range with its sleek and contemporary design, as well as being comfortable and inviting. It’s a style that looks great as a lounge and loses none of its aesthetic strengths when displayed as a single armchair or creating a great complete lounge suite package." Kim informs us.

Once you have your uniquely upholstered furniture piece, Dream Design Furniture and Upholstery goes that extra mile of offering the service of elegantly placing your piece on display by styling your home or space. Kim and her production team have styled many beautiful spaces across Canberra, but informs us that one has recently stood out amongst her many projects.

"I've styled a few spaces, but my favourite so far has to be The Jamala Wildlife Lodge at the National Zoo & Aquarium. It’s a really unique accommodation experience in the zoo grounds, with the most beautiful animal themed artifacts. The rooms are each styled different with furniture and art sourced from all around the world." Kim describes, "Through the collaboration of our talented design and production team, along with the experienced project manager for the resort, we designed and made custom lounges, chaises and chairs for the rooms and living spaces. As well as restoring classic furniture and decorating suites with zoo-themed cushions. Our custom designed cushions created a tasteful array of animal prints, earthy colours and natural textures that added an extra layer of detail in this luxury resort."

You can hear the passion in Kim’s voice as she describes what she love most about her work, “What I love most about my job is the creativity and artistic freedom. Seeing and interpreting new and emerging trends in colour, textiles, interior design and industrial design” Kim describes.

“I would love to be able to style Nicole Kidman’s home one day!” Kim Laughs, “I imagine her taste in home styling to be elegant and simple with an element of practicality. The overall style would be a combination of Hollywood glamour and the minimalist simplicity of modern styling and plenty of natural finishes. If I had the chance I’d definitely recommend our dining chairs in Mohair velvet to Nicole and our occasion’s range of timeless armchairs in leather which I think would complement her style beautifully” Kim smiles.

In terms of fabric trend forecasting, Kim is kind enough to share with us the next big trend for spring and summer. “Watercolour floral fabrics are really popular right now and the trend will definitely be leading into next year. With spring and warmer weather finally beginning, watercolour florals are a great way to bring a little vibrancy and happiness into your living spaces. The other trend coming in 2015/2016 will be crisp white and copper detailing and of course natural finished and raw timber and linens will continue to garner popularity within the furniture industry.” Kim tells us.

Aside from the restoration project Kim informs us that all Dream Design Furniture is handcrafted and has a surprisingly fast manufacture and delivery time of just 4 – 6 weeks. With everything being customised and made locally in Australia, it’s easy to recognise why so many, hotels, restaurants, residents and even local and state government agencies chose Dream Design Furniture and Upholstery for their projects. “Our products can be found all around Canberra, including within the Lodge and Government House, there’s even one pictured with the Queen!” Kim smiles.
