How to Keep Your House (and Carpet) Clean With Pets

How to Keep Your House (and Carpet) Clean With Pets
A pet really makes a house a home – and our furry, scaly and feathered friends often become a cherished member of the family in their own right. We lavish them with luxurious beds, deluxe scratching posts, designer water bowls and even stairs for them to access our own beds! However whilst pets bring joy and happiness into a house, they also bring hair, dirt, drool, urine and poop, despite any designer additions we may have gifted them (how rude).

Pets bring house cleaning to a whole new level, and any long-haired pet owner knows all too well the legendary war against pet hair. Whilst it can seem like one is fighting a losing battle against the tide of pet debris, there are plenty of tips and gadgets to make living with your pet a clean and stress-free experience. Your home will thank you for it, and your pet probably will appreciate a new opportunity to spread their scent and hair.

Problem #1 – Hair

Hair is the greatest scourge inflicted on pet owners by their beloved fur babies. Whether you have a long haired rag-doll or a short haird Jack Russel, if you own a pet, you will inevitably find enough pet hair in our house to stuff a doona. It settles in the carpet, in our linen, on the tiles, in the cupboards and on our clothes. Ordinary vacuum cleaners often aren’t powerful enough to combat the incessant tide of pet hair – this is the time to pull in the big guns. We’re obsessed with the Dyson handheld vacuums – and just wish we could vacuum the pets themselves!
“Depending on your breed, many cats and dogs will shed their coats leaving their fur to settle in areas around the house.
Carpets are notorious for attracting this pet dander. If you’re currently moving and still find that vacuuming just isn’t working, considering hiring an end of lease cleaning team to carpet steam clean the property. With more powerful suction, industrial steam cleaners will be able to lift the dirt and debris that the average vacuum leaves behind.” – Pete from This is Neat

Problem #2 – Dirt

A dog loves nothing more than to roll in the stinkiest, smelliest most pungent lingering smell they can find – and are then intent on transferring that substance on to everything they come across. Dogs are skilled at tracking in poo, soil, mud, vomit, swamp and anything else they can find across tiles, carpets, wood and across furniture. Whilst cats themselves are very clean animals, they love nothing more than knocking over pot plants or flower vases. Guard against the dirt by scotch-guarding any carpets, and invest in a good steam cleaner which can remove and sanitise any unsavoury pet trophies.  Once applied, steam clean the carpet to get out the residue. For messes made on tiles or hard to reach laces – try a steam and hard floor cleaner that can effortlessly remove substances you’d rather not touch.

Problem #3 – Urine & Poo

Whilst this may not be an issue for those with older pets – anyone who’s ever brought home a puppy or a kitten knows the joys of toilet training. We can try our hardest with kitty litter and pet toilet training pads, but there inevitably will be accidents. If you’ve owned a pet, you’ve probably googled “How do you get urine out of carpet”. Start with a good anti-bacterial urine cleaning solution that will break down the smells and lift it from the carpet. Once applied, steam clean the carpet to get out the residue. For messes made on tiles or hard to reach laces – try a hand held steamer that can effortlessly remove substances you’d rather not touch.
