Bec & George are back! Life has moved fast since their time on The Block Sky High in 2012. They have continued their television appearances, built their dream home, established a style and design consultancy, created a blog, fulfilled various ambassadorial roles and most importantly, welcomed their gorgeous baby Archie to the world.
And now they are looking to create a special place to retreat to. A place where they can relax, recharge, enjoy Archie and being parents. They want to create their very own Love Shack.
They’ve found a gorgeous spot – a small seaside hamlet in Lewisham, just north of Hobart, Tasmania. Daisy the previous owner of the property had a humble 70’s bungalow, albeit with a great location and a view to die for. With Bec & George in charge of the transformation, they have a vision to put all of the building and design knowledge they’ve accumulated over the past four years to work and create their ultimate Love Shack.
But now with the addition of little Archie, they are a team of three which changes the renovating dynamic, just a little!
Bec & George have found a great architect – Sam from the SGroup in Launceston. Sam gets what they are looking to create. There are some challenges with the site though – a sloping block, the view is stunning, but it is to the south, so how to get the warming north light into the building and maximize the view. Plus there is the issue of a grand old Norfolk pine tree right where the house would possibly extend to. Bec and George are relying on Sam to come up with a design that maximizes the site and the view without blowing their budget.
This time round Bec & George are not trying to do the build themselves. Choosing a builder is always a challenge, so Bec and George chat to the HIA in Tassie, and get along to a Home Show prior to making a decision. After visiting one of their previous projects, Bec & George enlist Lyden Builders from Hobart to make the Love Shack a reality.
There is something about renovation and building projects that mean that there are often unexpected costs that crop up. Bec & George’s project is no different – in just this episode they add $30,000 to their building costs thanks to asbestos onsite, old septic systems, fences that have to be moved and some pesky bluestone that needs blowing up. Ouch!
When you see the plans for the Love Shack though, it will be worth it. The layout and design are stunning. So good in fact, that the pine tree quickly gets cleared to make way. Makes me want to move to Tassie and it’s only Episode One.
Episode One of the Love Shack premiered on WIN TV Tasmania on May 22nd. Its replayed nationally on WIN at 5pm 28th May.
