Cushion Styling Tips

July 25, 2020

Giving your home a fresh look doesn’t need to cost you thousands of dollars – Just styling cushions around your home is a quick, inexpensive way to give your home a makeover. Read on for our expert tips on how to combine textures, colours, patterns and sizes to style your sofa and bed with cushions..

Style Your Sofa Sensational with Decorative Cushions in the Living Room

You can uplift your sofa by mixing textures to add visual interest and create a sense of depth and contrast. For example; combine coarse textured fabrics in neutral colours and team with a smooth texture such as leather.

Don’t be afraid to mix patterns or be bold with colour. Combing pattern is less tricky than you would imagine, providing the colours work well with each other and the patterns are quite different from each other. Use with some block colours to help create a sense of balance.

The trick is to co-ordinate colours that are cohesive and work well together. It is essential to keep within a particular colour palette or a family of colours. However, this doesn’t mean everything has be the same colour. Select one overriding colour for emphasis that will convey a mood and set the tone. It’s important to have an overarching palette so the eye has somewhere to rest. You don’t want your space to look too busy or become visually confusing.

Alternatively, introducing hints of complementary colours can create contrast and make the hero colour pop. Just be sure to select colours that harmonize with the rest of the interior elements within the home.

Style Your Bed Pretty with Decorative Cushions for Bedrooms

Make your bed more inviting with plush feather filled cushions in muted colours, soft, subtle patterns, silky tactile or richly textured accent pillows. Always start with the larger cushion at the back followed by smaller one placed in front. A 40 x 40cm square cushion will work nicely with a 60 x 60cm placed behind.

The number of cushions is of course personal preference, however, a collection of 3 – 5 will prevent the bed from appearing over the top and looking cluttered. Odd numbers work best as they are visually stronger than groups of 2 or 4 and are more restful to the eye. A round cushion or bolster is a great option for the 3rd or 5th cushion.

Cushions are a perfect way to mix and match trends and whatever your preference, experimentation is key. Introducing cushions to your home is an opportunity for expression and creativity. Selecting cushions can be similar to choosing art. It’s important to buy what speaks to you. Do take the above guidelines into consideration but ultimately choose the design, textures or patterns that you love, and most importantly have fun with it!
