Travelling through the Mt Buffalo National Park in rural Victoria on my way to Hewittville house, I did occasionally think I was lost. However, my directions did say that “when you think you are lost, you are nearly there,” and home owner Rae was right. As I was about to dial for help or consider double checking my sat nav, right before my eyes the jaw-dropping white country house appeared. With it’s impressive wrap around verandah and enviable 360 degree views this slice of paradise has been created just over ten years ago by Rae and her husband Jason.
“We actually bought our block on our wedding dayin 2004 ... I found out when my hubby announced it during his wedding speech.” Rae | Home Owner
The block, back then, was not what it appears today. “Our families wondered what we had done as it was pretty rough and overgrown but we loved it, especially the view of the neighbours vineyard. We lived in the shed while we built our home,” commented Rae.
Once the couple were married, they embarked on their building journey and what they have created for themselves, and now three children, is astounding.
Upon entering it’s hard not to feel like you have just stepped inside a charming country manor. The white and blue hues are carried throughout the interior of the open plan kitchen and living quarters with vignettes of antique and vintage collectables carefully displayed on side tables and arranged near places to sit and enjoy.
The style of the home is relaxed and curious with ornaments dotted around the home with an eclectic flair. Large comfy sofas just entice you to want to curl up with a cuppa and relax. Around the room, Rae has used various finds to her styling advantage. Old doors matched with suitcases or fabrics in the the same hue are clustered together on a vintage ladder while flowers are displayed in vases falling from the ceiling. There is a feast for your eyes everywhere you look.
“When I was a teenager and my friends were buying clothes I would be buying bits and pieces to decorate my room.” Rae | Home Owner
Prior to living in the country, Rae and Jason were beach dwellers but they feel the country life is much better suited to them. “We love the space that country living has given us. And the simplicity. Life is a slower pace so it's a great place to watch our family grow,” commented Rae.
The children’s rooms are reflections of their personality. The two boys share a room and the matched linen in bright blues and red create a visual impact.
Rae’s daughter is much more involved with the style of her room, perhaps taking after her mother’s love of interior decorating. Her soft pastel blue coloured room is styled sweetly with flowers, fairy lights and precious collectables.
The outdoor area is a haven for exploration. The verandah offers many places to sit whilst the dining area located just near the kitchen is ideal for outdoor entertaining, which also affords a perfect view of the pool.
At the front of the home the land undulates a little lower and with a small copse of trees it has created a wonderland of adventure making it ideal for the children’s play area.
Another dining area overlooking the neighbouring vineyard is situation on a small paved area.
“My favourite part of the house would be our verandah. Not only is it beautiful to sit and enjoy the view, it's also the place we have a lot of family fun. I've won my share of scooter races on that verandah!” Rae | Home Owner
Thank you Rae and Jason for having House of Home at your magnificent country manor home.
